Shiraz is gaining a name in South Africa. Known also as Syrah, the South African Shiraz is versatile in its vintage. Some winemakers go for a chunky, robust and tannic version pair these wines with very rich protein (a chargrilled steak, perhaps); others aim for a more restrained, mainly fruity result, all blackberries and plums; and a few go for a decidedly spicy, smoky-oaky take.
