Creative Italians brewers formed this style by borrowing from German and Czech lager traditions and adding a dry-hopping step that you might see in American IPAs or some English cask ales. The results are a very drinkable lager with subtle malt complexity and a boquet of continental hop aromas and flavors.
Italian Pils are often fermented in the uppermost part of their yeast's temperature range (or even a few degrees above the recommended temperature.) This is done to create esters, which differs from the vast majority of lagers which are fermented cold to minimize esters If you feel wary of pushing a yeast beyond the temperatures that the manufacturers presents for their lager strains a good alternative is to use a California Common style lager yeast (WLP810, WY2112 or Imperial's L05) which are recommended for use in the 50-60F range to create subtle esters.
